Teaching Philosophy:

My teaching philosophy is the result of a 30-year career in all facets of communication.  My ideas are fueled by a desire to encourage and engage the next generation of journalists, writers, public relations practitioners and communication experts.  My philosophy is to balance my documented real world experience and expertise with theoretical knowledge.  By being a good storyteller and experienced communicator, I am able to bridge the gap between working in the field and teaching.  I am strongly committed to helping students’ conquer their fears of public speaking while working on presentation skills for verbal and non-verbal communication. My goal is to strengthen their confidence and emphasize the importance of performance, and precision.  I work with students at all levels to develop professionalism and expertise in all facets of communication, public speaking, writing and public relations.

I expect my students to leave the classroom and Penn State with excellent communication skills, a sense of pride, and a strong work ethic.  I promote motivation, thinking, dedication and fearlessness.   When students need encouragement, extra help in developing their ideas, I try to meet their needs and work through the situation, much like a public relations problem.  It gives me great joy to build relationships with students and mentor them.   Knowledge is power.  As an educator, I believe patience and practice is key to honing the skills of a great communicator.
