More conference honors for Abington student-athletes

Two athletes familiar to Penn State Abington sports fans were among the five Abington students recognized last week by the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC).

Cross-country mainstays Valerie Santangelo and Alex Kane didn’t let the rainy conditions at the Lancaster Bible College invitational slow them down. Their dominant performances led the NEAC to once again name them runners of the week.

Santangelo, a sophomore, put up a personal-best course time of 20:52 to place first and finish a full 58 seconds ahead of her closest competitor. She claimed the individual title in the 46-runner event for the second straight year while leading the Abington women to a first-place team finish.

Kane set a new course record of 26:59 to take first place ahead of 44 other runners. It was the third consecutive year that Kane and the Abington men walked away with top individual and team honors at the invitational.

NEAC women’s tennis player of the week Sally Phung, a freshmen, won both of her matches helping Abington close out the fall season with a 5-0 overall record.

Abington swept the volleyball athlete of the week honors - Rachel Bohl for overall play and Victoria Lohman for defensive play.
