ABINGTON, Pa. -- Phil Curry was a unifying force in the Penn State Abington community even before tragedy struck his family. As captain of the soccer team and its MVP for three seasons, he was selected all-conference twice and earned awards for outstanding character, leadership and academics. Somehow he even found time to volunteer with his church.

When his mom was dying of cancer, his strength and resolve drew the Abington athletics community even closer together. Last week, the North Eastern Athletic Conference recognized Curry as a role model for all students and named him its annual Inspirational Athlete.

“He tries to promote good morals and values,” said Julie McNulty, head athletic trainer at Abington. “He has gone through a horrific situation, but he came out stronger on the other side of it.”
