High schoolers: Prepare for college with summer programming at Abington

ABINGTON, Pa. — Penn State Abington keeps the summer camp experience going through the high school years unlike many area programs. High schoolers can explore a variety of interests or participate in a series of camps geared toward college readiness.

Alina Raskopin, Abington Kids & Teen College director and a former high school teacher, understands that high school can be a fast-paced and demanding environment.

“We welcome older campers to experience our college campus. And we work with them on skill sets that can give them an advantage in high school, college, and the real world,” she said.

College readiness programming includes:

SAT Verbal Preparation | July 16 to 18
Tuesday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to noon

SAT Math Preparation | July 16 to 18
Tuesday though Thursday, 1 to 3:30 p.m.

About SAT preparation coursework:

  • Reviews basic concepts.
  • Explores test-taking strategies, including how to pace yourself, how to approach multiple-choice questions, and answer open-ended questions.
  • Take and review practice tests in class.
  • Understand the scoring of the SAT exam and how to compute scores on sample tests.

College Readiness Camp | July 29 to Aug. 2
Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Determine potential careers based on interests and personality strengths. Research post-secondary options. Develop a resume and a college essay. Explore key skills such as communication with professors, time management, credit card caution, stress management, and healthy habits.

Personal Finance Workshop | Aug. 5 to 9
Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Campers will be introduced to career planning, personal budgeting, basic banking, how credit works, school loans, auto payments and auto insurance, and "adulting." These skills will be applied through a variety of different platforms, including computer-based projects, escape rooms, use of Microsoft Excel, and real world application projects.

Debate and Public Speaking Workshop | Aug. 12 to 16
Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Learn how to alleviate anxiety and say goodbye to stage fright in this workshop that combines the flare of public speaking with the tact of debate. Examine qualities of great public speakers and focus on writing and presenting great speeches for a variety of situations so that you can speak up and speak out with confidence.
